Spring 2013
The study abroad semester began with a study of Le Corbusier’s Mill Owners Building in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India. Its distinct relationship to the cosmos and Jain religion led to the project for the Ahmedabad Institute of Cosmology. The 2753 sq. ft research-based center’s program included public as well as private spaces. Its public space includes a lower floor visitor center, a rooftop garden area, a resting space, as well as a major ramp that connects the Mill Owner’s to the Samrat Yantra, the sun dial located in the Sabarmati River, and runs at a mirrored angle as Le Corbusier’s original entrance ramp into the Mill Owner’s Building. The private spaces include offices for the researchers along with housing for them, located on the roof.
